[MONICA MANIA INTERVIEW] NEON HITCH

Neon Hitch is a singer/songwriter signed to Warner Music Group. She previously penned hits such as “Blah Blah Blah” by Ke$ha [RCA Records], “Traces” by Sky Ferreira [Capitol Records] and “Stupid Love Letter” by The Friday Night Boys [Fueled By Ramen Records].

Her upcoming debut album, “Beg, Borrow & Steal” is executively produced by Benjamin “Benny Blanco” Levin, who’s also responsible for “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera [A&M / Octone Records], “(Drop Dead) Beautiful” by Britney Spears featuring Sabi [Jive Records] and “Please Don’t Go” by Mike Posner [J Records / Sony Music Entertainment].

In this exclusive interview with Monica Mania, the “Bad Dog” singer talks about her debut album, dream duet, writing for other artists, and so much more. Enjoy!

Hamada: How did you get into singing and songwriting?

Neon Hitch: Totally by chance! I was sitting in the back of a car singing to myself and my boyfriend at the time overheard me. He loved my voice so much that he pushed me into singing. I went into this little studio and cut a demo. It got into the right hands and I'm so glad he was able to convince me at that time to be down with the idea. HAHA. I was first signed as a songwriter, but I've always been a performer, so I feel being an artist is what I was born to do!

Hamada: Who came up with the title for your debut album, “Beg, Borrow and Steal” and why?

Neon Hitch: That was all me. I wanted a title that summed up my life story as being a traveler / circus performer / homeless chick. I have had to do everything and anything I could to get to where I am today. "Beg, Borrow & Steal"... Do what ya gotta do!

Hamada: What can we expect from it?

Neon Hitch: It's like an audio movie. It will make you laugh, cry, dance and want to have sex! I've been heartbroken, been homeless, ridden elephants in India, fallen in love and lived in the jungle. I have a lot of life experience and emotional lyrical content!

Hamada: Whom did you collaborate with on the project?

Neon Hitch: Benny Blanco is the executive producer. I've worked with so many amazing people on this album: Sia, Bruno Mars, Esther Dean, Imogen Heap, Rico Love, Jim Jonsin, Jason Derulo and a lot of other fantastic producers as well.

Hamada: Tell us about your new single “Bad Dog.”

Neon Hitch: “Bad Dog” is a story about me meeting my equal at the time. I've always been a bad bitch who could tame most, but this bad dog was too much to handle… It was a dangerous, but exciting love.

Hamada: List some of your favorite songs on the album (along with brief liner notes about each one of them).

Neon Hitch: Well I LOVE "I Like Boy," which was the last song written for my album. It's so sexy! I also really love my ballads. One of my favorites is "Hello." It’s a very personal song that I wrote with David Brook. It’s about my journey and me talking to all the people who doubted me. It has a full orchestra and makes me want to cry when I hear it.

Hamada: How was it like working with Kara DioGuardi?

Neon Hitch: I. LOVE. Her! She is such a savvy business woman and a great role model. She's like my big sister. I spank her bum and she makes jokes about my accent. I have her to thank for being signed to Warner Brothers.

Hamada: You’ve written songs for other artists (namely Ke$ha, Sky Ferreira and Friday Night Boys). Describe the experience of having other singers perform your songs.

Neon Hitch: Having other artists sing your songs is mind blowing! I remember the first time I heard "Blah Blah Blah" on the radio, I couldn't stop smiling for like 3 hours. I'm glad that as an artist, I am also respected as a songwriter.

Hamada: If you could record a duet with any artist, living or dead, whom would it be and why?

Neon Hitch: The Beatles!!!!! They are so unique and talented. I love everything about them and what they stand for. I grew up listening to them as well as a lot of Motown.

Hamada: Whom are you currently listening to?

Neon Hitch: I'm really into "The Weeknd" right now. His voice is like melted chocolate!

Hamada: Tell us something that most readers will be surprised to learn about you.

Neon Hitch: My name was going to be Brown Rice! Luckily my dad decided Neon fit better. I grew up with hippie parents and traveled around in a bus with gypsies for most of my childhood... There are many things readers would be surprised to learn about me HAHA

Hamada: Describe yourself in 5 words.

Neon Hitch: Imaginative, Ambitious, Adventurous, Neon, Lover.

Hamada: How can someone woo you?

Neon Hitch: I'm old fashioned... I like romance. I need a guy to be as free spirited and spontaneous as I am so he can whisk me off my feet and we can have adventures together. I'm very passionate and I love hard!

Hamada: What are your resolutions for 2012?

Neon Hitch: To not sweat the little things! Worrying won't make the bus come any sooner.

Hamada: Any message you’d like to give to your fans all over the world?

Neon Hitch: ALWAYS BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! Be fearless and make your dreams come true.
