[MONICA MANIA INTERVIEW] STEPH JONES

Def Jam recording artist Steph Jones is currently putting the final touches on his upcoming debut album, "Mr. Ordinary", due in the first half of 2008. I caught up with the model turned singer to talk about his definition of "Ordinary", working with big time producers, writing songs for other artists, whether he still believes in "Old School Love", and so much more … Enjoy reading and don't forget to post your thoughts :)
Hamada: - What made you switch careers from Modeling to Singing?
Steph: - Actually I was doing both at the same time, it's just that modeling took off first.
Hamada: - Does the thought of people liking you more because of your looks than your music bother you?
Steph: - No it doesn't bother me because I felt the same way about Alicia keys when she first came out. I could care less about her music, I just liked to look at her, and now I love her music.
Hamada: - What can we expect from your debut album? And why the title "Mr. Ordinary"?
Steph: - My album will be out during spring/summer of 08, and I chose the name "Mr. Ordinary" because it best describes my ordinary in a whole, which to some people may not be so ordinary, but at the end of the day, that's my ordinary.
Hamada: - Whom have you worked with in terms of songwriters/producers? And which ones you'd love to hook up with in the near future?
Steph: - I don't have many "names" on the album. I have one song with Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, which is co wrote by Terius "Dream" Nash and I, two songs with Allstar, one song with Ryan "Alias" Tedder of One republic, and the rest are up and comers. I don't really care about names as long as the chemistry is amazing no matter what your track record is. In the future I would like to work with Robin Thicke, Andre 3000, Chris Martin of Coldplay, Kanye West, Stevie Wonder and a few others.
Hamada: - List some of your favorite songs on "Mr. Ordinary", and can you give us few liner notes about each one of 'em?
Steph: - Of course I love "Mr. Ordinary" because it is my introduction into the world of music.
"Southern Love" because of how every woman looks and feels when they hear it. It also has the same vibe as D'Angelo's "How Does It Feel".
"Catch a Cold" because it is a very creative way of asking your other not to leave you by yourself.
"Hollywood, Here She Comes" is a song I wrote about a girl who experienced the bad side of Hollywood, and upon recording it, there were all kinds of paranormal activity in the room which led me to believe that I was singing someone's exact story whose soul was trapped on earth.
Hamada: - If you could choose any female artist to duet with, who would be your first choice? And why?
Steph: - I would love to work with Amy Winehouse once she gets it together. Her music is so genuine and I would hate to see a talent such as hers go to waste.
Hamada: - You're also said to be writing songs for American Idol contestant Blake Lewis, and label mate Shareefa. How different is it to be penning songs for other artists than yourself? And if the opportunity is given, which other artists you'd like to write songs for?
Steph: - Yes I wrote two songs for Blake Lewis, which one made the album and is most likely his second single. I also worked with Jordin Sparks, Paula DeAnda, Jessie McCartney, Chingy and Joe. When it comes to writing I can do any kind of music because I don't limit myself. I do not believe in blocking creativity, so I make music as it comes. Even with my solo stuff, not everything sounds the same but all comes from my soul, and your soul never lies.
Hamada: - You call yourself "Mama's Boy", so how influential was she when it came to your musical career?
Steph: - She was very influential whether I knew it or not. She's a Jazz DJ, so everything she played around the house was influencing me regardless if I sang or not.
Hamada: - Lots of readers would like to know whether you're dating someone or single? And what's your definition of love?
Steph: - I am married to my music and my definition of love is when a baby is born, is when a blind man can see for the first time, is when a hardcore gangster breaks down and cries because his girl just left him, is when you are with another and everything starts falling in place which is a lot more than just coincidences and you start living your life as soulmates.
Hamada: - In today's times, most relationships are based on physical attraction. Do you think "Old School Lovin" still exists?
Steph: - Yes it still exists as does the black panthers and the kkk. It maybe hard to find, but it still exists.
Hamada: - Have you ever said "I Love You" to someone, and not meant it?
Steph: - No I haven't.
Hamada: - Tell us something that most readers will be surprised to learn about you?
Steph: - I spent 25 months in a French prison and recorded my first song ever 2 days after I was released which was two years ago.
Hamada: - Name three things you're totally obsessed with.
Steph: - Strawberry twizzlers, my grandmother's sweet potato pie, and paintballing.
Hamada: - Describe Steph Jones in 5 words?
Steph: - Fearless, energetic, weird (according to everyone else but normal to me), creative, and strong.
Hamada: - What's the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
Steph: - Gave me a roof over my head and food to eat when I got out of jail.
Hamada: - If you could alter one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Steph: - My bad credit (lol). Nah, I wouldn't alter anything.
Hamada: - What's the one thing you'd like to do before you turn 40?
Steph: - Buy my mom her dream home and see her face when I hand her the keys.
Hamada: - Is there any message you'd like to give to your fans all over the world?
Steph: - Well, I would like to say that I promise to deliver a complete album that everyone of all ages can enjoy, and I promise to stay true to who I am. And for anyone that is trying to do anything in life, just make sure you do it from your heart & soul because your soul never lies!

JORDIN SPARKS - JORDIN SPARKS [BILLBOARD ALBUM REVIEW]

"American Idol" season six winner Jordin Sparks will release her self-titled album on 20th November via Jive Records. The set features collaborations with Stargate: Tor Erik Hermansen & Mikkel S. Eriksen (Jessica Simpson, Christina Milian), Amanda Ghost (Janet Jackson, Beyonce), Johnta Austin (Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston), Bloodshy & Avant: Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg (Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue), Cathy Dennis (Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood), Lindy Robbins (Nicole Scherzinger, Beverley Knight) and The Underdogs: Harvey Mason Jr. & Damon Thomas (Jennifer Hudson, LeToya Luckett).
Here's what Gary Graff of Billboard Magazine had to say about Sparks' first full-fledged LP: "With an all-star team of writer/ producers, 17-year-old "American Idol" champ Jordin Sparks gets a first effort that's all over the map—and works. The best news about "Jordin Sparks" is that nobody's trying to mold her into a fly ho or a torchy diva; these 13 songs sound like exactly what she should be singing at this age and juncture in her career. The overall effect is sophisticated teen pop marked by innocent good cheer and harmony-laden vocal arrangements, although the synthesizer and drum machine-dominated tracks work better in some cases ("Tattoo," "One Step at a Time," "Now You Tell Me") than in others ("Shy Boy," "Young and in Love"). "No Air," Sparks' duet with Chris Brown, has plenty of hit potential, while "Now You Tell Me," with its swelling arrangement and muscular chorus, is the album's gem.
